Interview tip of the week
Don’t wear facial jewellery. Body piercings, including earrings, while a popular fashion, do not depict the professional image that the Fire Department hiring board is looking for. This is partly based on the age of those performing the interview and of the public we serve. It is also due to health and safely concerns that such accessories create.

Study Guide for the Firefighter Interview

The most important part of the firefighter recruitment process is the interview. This is an often overlooked area in firefighter education and training programs, and can make or break qualified candidates. The Study Guide for the Firefighter Interview is the best product that Seneca College has found to help in this area. We make it required reading in our Pre-Service Firefighter Program.

Entry into the Fire Service has become incredibly competitive. Feedback from our successful students indicate The Study Guide for the Firefighter Interview has made the difference. The Study Guide for the Firefighter Interview is an extremely valuable tool for anyone wishing to master the firefighter interview process!

When Fleming College began delivering its pre-service firefighting program, I was responsible for developing the students’ communication course, Communications for Firefighters. Part of the curriculum included teaching employment skills, yet when I looked for texts specific to the firefighters, I could find nothing appropriate for our students. Needless to say, I was thrilled to find Manser and Cooligan’s Study Guide for the Firefighter Interview. It is exactly what I had been looking for. Its many attributes include its detailed and thorough content, accessible language, and useful worksheets, from those who know exactly what it is like to go through a firefighting interview, having sat on both sides of the table. It is an invaluable resource, one I would highly recommend to all pre-service fighting programs. It will give your graduates that edge.

Our Instructor used The Study Guide for the Firefighter Interview in the course, Firefighters in the Community and it proved to be a very resourceful tool. The class held mock interviews and the feedback from the students was very positive. They felt the techniques recommended in the text were valuable and prepared them very well for the interviews. Our instructor liked the text and plans on using it again in the Fall 2005 term.

In the spring of 2004 Niagara College asked me to review the Study Guide For The Firefighter Interview. I felt it would be a useful tool for my students so I adjusted my class schedule for the Firefighter in the Community class and included this text in the program. I asked the students to critique it to see if they felt it was worthwhile. We had them read the text and then did an overview in the class. We then set up panels and had each student go through an interview. The students were apprehensive at first but ended up very enthused. After the course I had two students come back and tell me how much it had helped them in their actual interviews. I will be using the guide in my classes again this fall.

Mock-Interview

I had an interview with the two of you last December (Dec.5th). Well today I can say that since then I had 2 interviews with 2 major departments and have been offered a position with both. I have just signed my offer of employment this afternoon. Thanks to the two of you my dream came true. I KNOW I wouldn't have made it this quick without your help. Thank you very much.

Jack

Your assistance and guidance was a key to the improvement of my interview skills. I gained the confidence and knowledge needed to be successful in my first and only interview with the fire service. Your hands-on approach and enthusiasm for the fire service enhanced my drive to learn how to conquer the interview and be the best I could be. I would highly recommend the Firefighter Interviews.com to anyone wanting to improve their interview skills and leave a good lasting impression on the interview board.
Geoff

I returned home from my mock interview last night with the greatest feeling that the money and the time could not have been spent more wisely. The service these two fine Fire Fighters provided was indeed invaluable. I would have to say the best value for the dollar that I have ever spent in my pursuit thus far. I really believe that the service that these gentlemen provide is worthwhile.
Steve

I went to Markham today and signed my contract as a probationary firefighter. It's hard to believe that the dream has finally come true. If it wasn't for you and Shawn I wouldn't be where I am today. Thank you very much!
Brad

I'm just writing to say thank you very much for all you help with the interview counseling, it definitely paid off as I just signed my papers for the Town of Markham. Today is a great day!!!! Have a fantastic day,
Steve

I had my interview last Thursday and I have to say without your mock interview I would have been lost. I was able to use your feedback and create a list of probable questions and suitable answers. I was well prepared. Thanks again!
Tim

Well, my time has come. I got the call this morning from Belleville HR offering me a job as a probationary firefighter. I wanted to express my gratitude to you guys for all the help and guidance you have given me during this long process (relatively short compared to most people I guess, but I was really getting anxious). All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you.
Lucas

I would like to thank you for the feedback on the interview this past Saturday. I think it will be invaluable in the future, assuming I will be getting to the interview stage at some point.
Mike

...which leads me to the Firefighter Interviews.com interview I had last weekend. It was great. I would recommend it. The entire thing was taped and they provided some great feedback and insight into the entire process. I walked out a lot more confident than I was when I walked in.
Mike

I had a mock interview with both of you in October of 2004 to aid me in an interview with the Calgary fire dept. As you know, with your help, I was able to pass the interview phase which took place back in October. I have now passed all the recruitment requirements of the CFD and was offered a job two days ago. I wanted to take this opportunity before I move to thank both of you again for your help in preparing me for the recruit process. Thanks again for your help.
