Everyone has weaknesses. Describe for the board what your weakness is. What have you done to overcome this weakness?
Being a firefighter can mean long periods of quiet followed by moments of extreme intensity. This can take a toll on a person. Describe a time when you faced an emergency situation. How did you deal with it emotionally and physically, and what did you learn about yourself as a result?
Loyalty, pride, honesty and integrity are all important characteristics of a firefighter. Define these terms and explain why you think they are important in a firefighter.
Why do you want to be a firefighter?
What strengths would you bring to our department?
You are at a house fire, and command has declared the house lost, and as a result, has ordered firefighting activities to concentrate on both houses beside the one lost. The home owner approaches you and is demanding you save her house, the owner is very irate. What do you do?
Define integrity. Give us an example of when you demonstrated integrity.
How would you deal with a difference of opinion in the station?
Why (city name) fire department?
How would you deal with a difference of opinion at an emergency scene?
What does insubordination mean?
Briefly explain how you would draft from a porta-tank.
Describe a time when you were on a team working toward a common goal. What was your role, how did you motivate the team?
Why do you think team work is important in the fire service?
Tell us a time when you were working on a team that wasn’t functioning well. What was the situation and how did you deal with it?
What is empathy? Why is it important for a firefighter to be empathetic?
Describe a time when you demonstrated empathy.
Why should we choose you over other candidates?
What is friction loss in relation to firefighting?
Are you a tolerant person? Illustrate when you demonstrated tolerance.
What attracts you to our community?
You arrive at a confirmed apartment fire, when you exit the truck you are approached by the residents who want to go into the truck because they state they will freeze to death out side. It’s -30 degrees outside. What do you do?
How would you deal with racial harassment?
Have you ever been in an accident before? If so what were the details? Were you charged?

How would you solve a technical problem at an emergency situation?
Describe an emergency situation that you had to mitigate. How did you handle it emotionally?
The ability to communicate is vital in the fire service. Could you describe a situation you’ve experienced where a lack of communications made the situation worse? What did you do to improve the situation?
What would you do if you suspect a fellow firefighter has a drug problem?
How many days a year, is it appropriate to be off work due to sick leave?
How important do you think reliability is? Can you give us an example of a time when a situation was made worse by an unreliable work mate?
Is there a difference between problem solving during station duties, and problem solving at an emergency?
How would you deal with an irate member of the public?
Describe what training and education you have that relates to the fire service?
What does team work mean to you?
Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a personal problem with someone on the job?
Every call we go on is different, no call is ever by the book, so firefighters often have to make quick decisions. Can you describe a situation where you clearly demonstrated initiate and/or creativity.

How do you feel about working holidays and weekends?
What would you like to improve about yourself?
How do you feel about hiring from minority groups?
What does safety mean to you? Describe what measures you take in your present job.

Name the different agencies the fire department may have to deal with.
While conversing with a fellow firefighter in front of the fire hall, the firefighter notices a visible minority walking by. The firefighter verbalizes a racial slur about the minority in a joking matter to the group. What would your response be?
